This weekend, Troop 99 participated in another rifle shoot with the Goffstown Fish and Game Association in Weare. This was a fun shoot, designed to provide scouts with the opportunity to learn or improve rifle shooting skills and firearm safety. At this time we will not be offering this to fulfill requirement of the Rifle Shooting merit badge, but hope that is something we can incorporate in the future. In accordance with BSA policy, the scouts were limited to shooting .22 caliber rim fire rifles only.
Like the event last October, this event started with a required firearm safety and range safety safety briefing. This briefing also covered instructions for the proper use of the Ruger 10/22 rifles used at the event.
Then the scouts headed out on to the range to practice their skills. For new scouts it was an introduction to firearm shooting, while for some other scouts it was an opportunity to improve their rifle shooting skills.
This event was sponsored and hosted by the Goffstown Fish & Game Association. They generously provided the rifles, ammunition, instructors, and range safety officers in addition to closing down one of their ranges so that it could be used exclusively by Troop 99. The instructors donated their time for this event, which will be counted towards their standing as NRA certified instructors. Targets were donated by Jay's Gun Shop on Black Brook Road in Dunbarton. The ammunition was provided through a grant Goffstown Fish & Game received from the National Rifle Association. Please remember to express your gratitude to members of the Goffstown Fish & Game Association as well as Jay's Gun Shop.
